Going Solo: 6 Ideal Destinations for Women Traveling Alone

Everybody should experience traveling alone once in their lifetime. Although the idea might be frightening at first, going on a solo trip provides a good opportunity for self-discovery. You can focus on where you want to go, what you want to do, and when you want to do these things. Aside from having some “me time,” you will also have more opportunities to meet new people, and to prove your independence when encountering challenges during your trip.

Some people, especially women,  worry about their safety when going on a solo adventure abroad. Understandably, there’s some concern about security in some parts of the world. Well, you don’t have to worry anymore. Here are some amazing destinations perfect for women traveling alone.

  1. Bali, Indonesia

You’ve read it in the book or seen it in the movie: this mystical Indonesian island is the perfect destination for women who want to do their own version of “Eat. Pray. Love.” Everything about this island will erase all your troubles: from the picturesque temples to the captivating beaches with fine sand and clear waters. The mood on the entire island is just relaxing and particularly appealing for those seeking for serenity for the body and the soul. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that food and accommodations in the popular tourist destination are very easy on the wallet.

  1. Stockholm, Sweden

This is the ultimate European city for the fashionista. Walking on the cobbled streets and across the ochre-colored buildings of Gamla Stan, the old town, will make you feel like a modern supermodel transported back in time, without losing the stylishness. The chic city center, meanwhile, looks like something that was taken straight out of the pages of a fashion magazine. Aside from its fashion sense, Stockholm also boasts of a vibrant art and food scene. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that this city was named one of the happiest places on Earth.

  1. Costa Rica

Because it is less touristy, this rugged Central American country provides more opportunity for freedom and serenity. The nation’s fantastic natural wonders—from majestic waterfalls to picturesque volcanoes—provide a perfect backdrop for rest and relaxation. If you’re up for adventure, you might also want to try white water rafting and wildlife watching. Of course, you also have to try the delicious southern Carribean cuisine  served in this country.

  1. Phuket, Thailand

Want to experience partying on an island paradise? This vast resort island in Thailand has a safe and lively party scene, where you can meet friendly locals and fellow tourists alike. Bar-hopping is not a problem here, because clubs have very affordable food and drinks. Apart from the night life, there are a lot more things to enjoy in Phuket. The beaches are breathtaking, with their fine sand and inviting waters of different shades of blue. The island has also evolved in recent years into a place for art and culture, and also has a wildlife and forest reserve that nature-lovers will definitely enjoy.

  1. New Zealand

If you want to be alone and one with nature, this should be your country of choice. It never seems to run out of natural wonders, with rolling hills, lush forests and interesting rock formations that will surely leave you in awe. It’s no wonder that the epic trilogy “Lord of the Rings” chose this country as its location, because the place in itself is epic. Aside from the natural landscape, the local cuisine here is also worth exploring, with fresh seafood like abalone and sea urchin common in restaurants.

  1. Reykjavik, Iceland

This is the city that excels when it comes to keeping locals and tourists safe. Reykjavik has the lowest crime rates in the world, so this is a haven for visitors, especially female ones. Aside from this, however, Iceland’s capital has so many other things to be proud of. The art scene here is very much alive, with the National Museum giving a creative glimpse of how the country has evolved. The old harbor, meanwhile, has a quaint and peaceful vibe. You might also want to spend time dipping in one of the city’s geothermal pools—a favorite pastime among locals.

Traveling alone does not mean you should be lonesome and worried all the time. Travelers, especially women, can go to these destinations and still find fun and relaxation. It’s good to go solo once in a while.
